Tasting notes

Description

Sangarida Mencía 2024 is the entry-level red wine from Sangarida, the Bierzo project of the Fariña brothers, the same winegrowers behind the renowned Galician winery Attis Bodega y Viñedos. Founded in 2019, Sangarida was created to complete the family portfolio with wines from the Bierzo DO, focusing on Mencía and Godello as the main varieties.

Made with 100% Mencía grapes from various selected plots on the slopes of the Montes Aquilianos, with over 50-year-old vines grown in the vaso method under an ecological philosophy. The slate slopes of the Montes Aquilianos provide freshness, minerality, and that distinctive Atlantic character so typical of the best red wines from Bierzo.

The winemaking is careful and respectful of the fruit: sorting table at the winery entrance, complete destemming, and alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine then undergoes a brief 3-month aging on fine lees in tank, which adds texture and roundness without losing the variety's freshness.
