Merlot is one of the most widely grown and popular red grape varieties in the world, originating in the Bordeaux, France region.
It is known for producing approachable, smooth wines with a medium to full body.
- Merlot wine profile:
- Flavor: It typically features intense notes of red and black fruits such as cherries, plums, and blackberries. If aged in barrels, it develops notes of vanilla, chocolate, and cedar.
- Texture: It has moderate tannins and medium acidity, giving it a silky texture and a "fleshy" mouthfeel.
- Styles: International style: Harvested later to maximize ripeness, resulting in fuller-bodied wines with higher alcohol and notes of ripe black fruit. Traditional style (Bordeaux): Harvested a little earlier to preserve acidity, producing lighter wines with floral and red-fruit notes.
- Thanks to its balanced profile, Merlot is highly versatile at the table:
- Meats: Duck, roast chicken, pork chops, and lean cuts of red meat.
- Cheeses: Semi-aged cheeses such as Gouda, Brie, or Camembert.
- Pasta and stews: Dishes with tomato-based sauces or mildly spiced legume stews.
Merlot adapts very well to different climates, but it is especially prominent in these areas:
Bordeaux (France): It is the birthplace of this grape. On the "Right Bank" (areas such as Saint-Émilion and Pomerol), Merlot is the star grape, producing some of the world's most expensive and prestigious wines (such as the famous Petrus).
California (USA): Particularly in Napa Valley and Sonoma. International-style Merlots are produced here: very fruit-forward, fuller-bodied, higher in alcohol, and with a pronounced vanilla note from oak aging.
Chile (Central Valley): It offers Merlots with excellent value for money. They are usually very easy-drinking wines, with notes of fresh fruit and a touch of spice.
Italy: It stands out in the Tuscany, where it is used both for blending with Sangiovese and for making 100% Merlot cult wines (known as Super Tuscans).
